SALEWA, SA means Saddler (made saddle), LE means Leather (leather), and WA means Wares (product).

In 1935, Josef Liebhart, chairman of the German Harness Association, founded SALEWA GmbH in Munich, which mainly provides high-quality and durable leather and outdoor textile products, and began to develop mountaineering and skiing equipment. In 1955, SALEWA supported Hermann Huber's Andean expedition in the Cordillera Mountains, which established SALEWA's professional position in mountaineering expeditions with product lines such as large metal pipe-type backpacks, ice axes and crampons. In 1962, SALEWA developed an ultra-light, fully adjustable cramp, and in the next few years developed and launched the world's first hollow ultra-lightweight climbing iron lock.
