Nursing Reagents-New methods for latent fingerprint imaging and drug detection developed by Shanghai Yingwu Institute

Recently, the Institute of Physical Biology, Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences has developed a method for imaging latent fingerprints and quantitative detection of drug cocaine in fingerprints using nanophotonics. The relevant results were published in German Applied Chemistry (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2013, 52, 11542-11545), and were selected as the current hot paper.

Fingerprints, because of their lifetime invariance, uniqueness and convenience, have been widely used in daily life as an important means of biometric identification. The latent fingerprint corresponding to the positive fingerprint means that after the finger makes unintentional contact with other substrates, the sweat and grease in the fingers remain on the surface of the substrate, and the fingerprint is not visible to the naked eye. Analysis and detection of latent fingerprint imaging and its chemical composition, while identifying, can also discover more valuable biological and medical information. Under the guidance of mentors Fan Chunhai and Li Di, under the guidance of mentors Fan Chunhai and Li Di, the Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics PhD student Li Kun has developed a new latent fingerprint identification technology based on surface plasma imaging technology.

The study found that gold nanoparticles can be adsorbed on the oil of the latent fingerprint and emit a strong local surface plasmon resonance light scattering (LSPRS) signal. The dark field microscope can clearly image the latent fingerprint. Further, by modifying the cocaine nucleic acid aptamer on the surface of the gold nanoparticles to give it dual functions of development and molecular recognition, the nanophotonics method can sensitively detect cocaine in fingerprints. Normal people's fingerprints scatter green light, and fingerprints with cocaine scatter red light. The detection limit of cocaine in fingerprints by this method can reach 50ng. This method can solve the problem of poor timeliness of drug detection in the serum and urine of drug addicts. At the same time, it combines drug information and personal identification information (fingerprints), and is expected to be used for screening of drug users and drug carriers in criminal investigation.
