I. What to Watch Out For When Building a Tennis Court Facility
When constructing a tennis court, it's essential to follow the design specifications closely. There are various types of facilities for tennis competitions, and each must be built according to the guidelines provided in the design documents. 1. One critical aspect is the construction of the net base. A tennis net requires two supporting posts, and if the foundation of these posts isn't deep or wide enough, the net may become unstable. This can lead to leaning or even cracking of the base, especially when exposed to rain or frost in winter. These issues can severely damage the playing surface. Based on past experiences, as shown in Figure 5.8, proper installation is crucial. The singles net should be 10.06 meters long, while the doubles net should be 12.80 meters. The distance between the net posts must not be less than these values. You can use either single or double-stranded net posts, but standard posts should always be placed at the position of the singles net posts during official matches.2. A fence should be installed around the court. The fence typically consists of steel pipe columns and wire mesh with a 5cm x 5cm grid. It should be green or blue in color, with a height ranging from 4 to 6 meters. The depth of the fence posts should be at least 0.7 meters, and C20 concrete should be used for the foundation. If there’s no steel fence but instead a solid wall, a wall-hanging net is required during competitions. This soft woven net should be 2.5 meters high and at least 20 meters long, also available in green or blue.
II. Checking the Moisture Conditions of the Asphalt Concrete Base
Polyurethane plastic surfaces are commonly used over asphalt bases, but they require a strong bond. However, polyurethane materials are highly sensitive to moisture. If the asphalt base contains any water, bubbles will form quickly after the plastic is laid, causing separation between the layers. As temperature changes, these bubbles can grow larger, sometimes reaching up to 1 square meter in size. In some cases, small bubbles as small as 3 cm in diameter may appear, leading to extensive repairs or even complete replacement of the surface, especially in smaller courts. This issue is primarily caused by moisture in the asphalt base layer.To prevent this problem, it's crucial to check the moisture content of the base before applying the plastic surface. Currently, there are no advanced electronic tools available for this purpose. Two simple methods can be used: the first is the sealed box method. A transparent acrylic box measuring 40cm x 40cm x 5cm is made, sealed airtight on all sides except one 40cm x 40cm side, which is left open and covered with plasticine. After 24 hours, if no moisture appears inside the box, the base is considered dry and ready for the plastic layer. Another method involves placing a plastic sheet larger than 50cm x 50cm on the asphalt base, sealing the edges with sand and small bricks. After 24 hours, if steam bubbles appear under the plastic, it indicates moisture is present, and the plastic surface should not be laid yet. If no moisture is detected, the base is dry and suitable for the next step.
