MaST II Community Charter School – Phase II
The second phase of the MaST II Community Charter School completed the vision laid out in the master plan for a vibrant and standalone charter school campus in the heart of the Tacony neighborhood. Built to complement the first phase, the new 84,000 square foot building significantly expands the educational facilities. This phase introduced a variety of learning and recreational spaces, including a fully-equipped maker space, a competitive gymnasium with a fitness mezzanine, an expanded media center, and an e-gaming and video broadcasting suite. These additions provide students with a dynamic environment that fosters creativity, teamwork, and academic success.
Physicians Pavilion
Located in Brooklyn, The Brooklyn Hospital Center serves a diverse population of nearly one million residents. To meet the growing demand for quality healthcare services, the hospital needed a new outpatient environment. EwingCole designed the 45,000 square foot Physicians Pavilion to accommodate more than 20 specialties spread across six floors. Drawing inspiration from hospitality environments, the interior spaces feature rich materials and bold color schemes that vary from floor to floor, giving each level its own distinct character. These thoughtful design choices create a welcoming atmosphere that enhances the patient experience.
Irving Plaza
Irving Plaza is one of New York City's most cherished live music venues. Originally built in the 1870s as three separate dwellings, the structure has undergone numerous transformations over the years, eventually becoming a popular music venue in the 1990s. While not a historic preservation project, EwingCole's design team aimed to capture the essence of the venue's early 20th-century aesthetic and bring it back to life. The result is a stunning blend of Victorian elegance and the modern energy of punk, metal, and indie rock. Fans can enjoy a visually and audibly immersive experience when attending their favorite live performances.
Madeira Shell House
Nestled along the scenic Schuylkill River, Boathouse Row is one of Philadelphia's most beloved landmarks, featuring the Madeira Shell House, which serves as the home base for the University of Pennsylvania's varsity rowing programs. Constructed in 1875, it is one of the oldest boathouses in the country. However, the current facility struggles to meet the growing demands of the university's rowing programs. EwingCole's renovation project not only preserves the historic exterior but also modernizes the interior, addressing operational deficiencies and revitalizing this iconic structure. The updated design ensures that the Madeira Shell House will continue to support Penn rowing well into the future.
National Museum Of American History
The National Museum of American History houses nearly two million artifacts and over three shelf-miles of archival collections. This transformative renovation is part of a multi-year effort to renew the museum's 120,000 square foot west exhibition wing. EwingCole collaborated closely with stakeholders from 14 departments to create unique experiences aligned with the museum's goals. The resulting design features flexible galleries that can be easily reconfigured on each of the wing's three floors, eliminating the need for extensive capital projects. The spaces now resemble open lofts, with modular power and data systems and theatrical lighting integrated into the ceiling.
White Plains Outpatient Surgery Center
White Plains Outpatient Surgery Center is a nonprofit healthcare organization dedicated to providing high-quality acute healthcare and preventive medical care to residents of, workers in, and visitors to Westchester County, NY. To relieve pressure on the main hospital, they acquired a new location to establish an outpatient surgery center. EwingCole was tasked with the complete interior renovation of the former noncompliant surgery center, including full mechanical and electrical upgrades. The newly renovated facility is now compliant with current standards and features a redesigned lobby, updated operating rooms, and recovery bays. The design team incorporated soothing textures, natural elements, and symbolic graphics of budding branches to create a calming environment for patients and visitors alike.
