This is my sixth year attending the SHOT Show in Las Vegas, Nevada, and this year marked a first for me: I witnessed the emergence of an entirely new product category—hunting e-bikes. These rugged, lithium-powered mountain bikes are designed to revolutionize how hunters move through the backcountry.
Equipped with powerful 750W or 1000W motors, these e-bikes use microprocessors and sensors to provide pedal assistance, making it easier to cruise, haul gear, or even tow small loads. The idea is simple but effective: you can quietly ride one into the woods without spooking game, then bring your catch out on the same bike. It’s like having a motorized pack animal that doesn’t make noise or leave a scent trail.
I had a chance to sit down with Dean Stokes from BAKCOU, a Salt Lake City-based brand, and he gave me a solid overview of this emerging market. While still relatively niche, the category is growing fast. Some models feature rear-wheel motors, while others use mid-drive systems, which offer more torque and are better suited for climbing and pulling heavy loads.
The BAKCOU bikes are nine-speed mountain e-bikes with both pedal assist and a throttle. With pedal assist, riders can travel anywhere from 10 to 50 miles depending on terrain and effort. If using only the throttle, the range drops to about 3–5 miles. But they can also be ridden like traditional mountain bikes if the rider prefers.
Some models come with front suspension, while others have full suspension for added comfort. Prices start around $4,000 for BAKCOU models, with some going over $6,000. Accessories like baskets, racks, and trailers are common, making them versatile for different hunting and outdoor needs.
BAKCOU even offers a solar charging kit, allowing users to charge their bikes off-grid in 4–5 hours. Many backcountry areas restrict powered transport, so riders can adjust the wattage to comply with local regulations. A small display on the handlebars lets users monitor battery life, control motor settings, and customize their ride.
One unique feature is that the bike detects when the rider stops pedaling and automatically disengages the motor, allowing the bike to roll freely. This helps conserve energy and gives the rider more control.
While the market is still small—estimated to have less than 10,000 units in circulation—the trend is clear. There are a few high-end manufacturers, and more are entering the space. As battery technology improves and prices drop, these e-bikes could become a staple for hunters and preppers alike.
In a grid-down scenario, e-bikes offer a fossil-fuel-free alternative. However, they are complex machines with motors, batteries, and electronics that can fail over time. Still, in a short-term crisis where gas is scarce, they could be a reliable way to move quickly over flat terrain with pedal-assist power.
Overall, hunting e-bikes represent an exciting evolution in outdoor mobility. Whether for stealthy hunting or emergency preparedness, they’re worth keeping an eye on.
