Asian ink market development trend

For ink manufacturers, the Asia-Pacific region has gained tremendous economic growth opportunities in the past year due to its rapid recovery from the economic downturn. Before the global economic recession, the printing ink industry in the Asia-Pacific region grew very fast, with China and India growing at an extraordinary rate.

The Asia-Pacific region is recovering from the economic recession and can now be said to be a large ink manufacturing region. Among the seven major international ink manufacturers, four ink manufacturers have their headquarters in Japan (DIC Corporation, Toyo Ink Manufacturing Co., Ltd., Sakata Ink Co., Ltd. and Tokyo Printing Ink Manufacturing Co., Ltd.), and almost all of them are well-known. International ink manufacturers have branches in the region.

In addition to Asia-Pacific countries, the printing industry in other countries has also grown, and sales that have been slowly recovering due to the economic downturn have increased significantly. An official at the International Operations Department of Sakata Ink Co., Ltd. said that the 2009 quarter was a difficult period for the department, but since then ink manufacturers and printers have seen a trend toward operational improvement. In their report, they pointed out that the operation status of Putian Ink has improved in the second half of 2009. The sales volume of Sakata Ink Co., Ltd. has grown strongly in China and seeks to increase sales opportunities in Vietnam.

Yu Adachi of Toyo Ink Manufacturing Co., Ltd. said: 'Toyo Ink has grown in many areas. Sales of pillar products in Asia and Oceania remained weak this quarter. However, driven by the demand for offset inks and gravure inks in China and Southeast Asia, sales have recovered rapidly since the second quarter. In China, demand for non-toluene gravure inks has increased due to increasing demand for environmentally friendly products. In addition, China and Southeast Asia have resumed demand for gravure inks for food packaging. '

Similar to the printing industry, packaging inks in the region operate better than publishing inks.

DIC's Koji Akamatsu said: 'With the exception of Japan, business in Asia is almost flat compared to the US and Europe. Packaging inks rose sharply, while news inks and publishing inks declined slightly. Among the three types of inks, the level of demand is more or less the same as in the previous year. Japan has seen a trend in demand for various types of inks, but it is estimated that total ink demand will be lower than the previous year. As progress has been made in 2009, DIC recognizes the improvement of the Japanese economy. The Japanese economy first fell to the bottom during the January-March period, and then began to gradually rebound, and has now recovered to about 80% of the 2007 level. '

Indian market

The two important countries in the Asia-Pacific region are China and India. Mr. Akamatsu said that the growth of the Indian region is very good and supported by its economic growth, which increased by 6.1% in 2009.

Mr. Akamatsu added: 'India has a large population and the economy has been growing. DIC has many institutions operating in India for a long time and has established a good business model. Mr. Adachi said: 'Toyo Ink Group continues to actively expand overseas printing ink business, such as expanding printing ink business in Europe, the United States and the rapidly growing Asian region. We believe that India, China and Southeast Asia should be the primary markets. We have taken active measures to strengthen cooperation with local companies and expand our network of production and sales bases. Through these efforts, in 2008, Toyo Ink opened an offset printing ink factory and established a joint venture sales company with local companies in India. We also started selling gravure inks in China. '

An official of Sakata Ink added that India is not only a major consumer, but also a major exporter in the Middle East and Africa.

Major markets and trends

Packaging printing is at the forefront when it comes to important market segments, while Asia Pacific printers enjoy a larger export business. Officials at Sakata Ink said the company has adjusted its business strategy for the packaging and printing industry, and this business decision has been implemented in countries such as India, Indonesia and Vietnam.

Mr. Akamatsu pointed out: 'The main market in the region is the packaging ink market, because the packaging market can resist the impact of the economic recession and continue to grow. We will also expand the publishing and news ink market. '

Mr. Adachi said: 'In addition to the growth of the packaging market, Toyo Ink also plans to expand its business in the UV ink and environmentally friendly inks and coatings markets. In emerging markets in Asia, with the rapid growth of UV inks, Toyo Ink hopes to see an increase in the amount of ink for printing and packaging. In addition, with the strengthening of supervision and the increasing public awareness of environmental protection, the demand for environmentally friendly products will increase at any time. Through our R&D activities, Toyo Ink is working to develop new and innovative products that deliver high performance while effectively reducing volatile organic compounds and using renewable energy. '

Mr. Akamatsu said: 'The emphasis on the environment has gradually become a prominent problem in the region, we will provide more vegetable oil-based inks and water-based gravure inks. 'The official of Putian Ink pointed out that as early as 10 years ago, the company promised to develop environmentally friendly products. With the ISO 14000 series, the company offers these types of products to Asian customers.

market expectation

As the Asia-Pacific region has grown faster than Europe and the US, leading companies in the ink industry are looking to expand their business opportunities. Officials at Sakata Ink Co., Ltd. said that the future of Sakata Ink in the region depends on the economic development of Asian countries.

Mr. Akamatsu also said: Although the demand for inks in many countries and regions is increasing, we will not pursue the quantity, but pursue the profitable market, such as the packaging ink market, the publishing ink market and the news ink market. In Japan, demand for news inks and publishing inks has fallen, but demand for packaging inks will remain firm. Therefore, DIC will focus on the packaging ink market and reduce costs.
