Polyester bottle packaging water metrics

Drinking water includes mineral water, purified water, and soda water. In recent years, in order to ensure the high quality of potable water and the efficacy of packaging, and to strengthen the competitiveness of the brand in the market, higher requirements have been put on the use of polyester bottles for water packaging. Some of these requirements have become internal control targets for some companies.
1. formaldehyde
Some European drinking water companies have put forward a new requirement for polyester bottles - formaldehyde, that is, after filling the water, to detect the formaldehyde content in the water. The requirement is <10 x 10-9? That is < 10 ppb =
The formaldehyde in the water comes from the resin that makes up the polyester bottle, so we have to find out the source of formaldehyde in the polyester resin. Formaldehyde is known to be oxidized by methanol, and decomposition of some organic compounds or oxidation combustion can also produce formaldehyde. In addition, under certain conditions, carbon monoxide can be hydrogenated to synthesize formaldehyde. It is also known that these reactions may occur during resin synthesis and viscosification under the following conditions:
(1) Using dimethyl terephthalate as a raw material;
(2) The use of trimethyl phosphate and other methoxy-containing auxiliaries;
(3) Organic matter in the combustion gas stream at the time of viscosity increase;
(4) Hydrogenation and deoxygenation are adopted when the viscosity is increased, and excess hydrogen reacts with the combustion of organic matter to produce carbon monoxide. As a result, the polyester resin contains formaldehyde.

2. Acetaldehyde content
As a bottle of polyester resin chips, its quality standard stipulates the acetaldehyde content, which is <1×10-6. This indicator can be done by almost all PET bottle chip manufacturers. However, after injection molding into a preform, the acetaldehyde content in the resin increases. For this reason, the acetaldehyde content in the resin of the preform is controlled to be less than 10×10 −6 (coke bottle requirement is 5×10 −6 or less). However, some domestic water bottle manufacturers disregard this requirement by blending bright polyester chips with an acetaldehyde content of (60~150)*10<-6> , resulting in water bottle acetaldehyde levels exceeding several times to more than ten times. This is not normal. The situation will not be discussed. The acetaldehyde content in polyester preforms increased. In addition to the injection molding equipment and process factors, the quality of PET bottles was the main one. It is understood that domestic bottles were used from the 1980s to the mid-1990s.

For preforms produced from polyester chips, the acetaldehyde content is generally (8 to 15)×10-6, and the cola bottles are required to be 5×10-6 or less, or later (6 to 8)×10-6. The requirements are hard to do.
In recent years, companies such as Danone and Nestle have also raised high requirements for water bottle preforms with an acetaldehyde content of <5×10-6 (or even <3×10-6).

3. Bottle expansion test
It is understood that Russia and other countries will test water bottles for inflatable bottle expansion because they use soda water in their PET bottles. Test conditions: Fill the water to a certain height, fill the carbon dioxide pressure 0.35MPa, placed in a 40 °C oven 24h, observe the bottle height changes. General requirements for height variation < 2%. The crystallization behavior of polyester resin is closely related to the size of the expansion bottle.
