[Chinese Packaging Network News] A bird's nest shop on Tmall, which claimed to be the "first in online sales," has been suspected of fraud after an investigation by the Zhejiang Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau. The authority found that the shop had illegally altered the original source codes of imported bird's nests, misleading consumers about the product’s origin.
Ms. Chen, a customer, purchased 20 bird's nests from the Lynx Mall’s "Yangege" flagship store, each containing 10 grams and priced at 272 yuan. Doubting the quality, she sent the product to the Chinese Academy of Inspection and Quarantine. The results revealed a significant discrepancy between the inspection findings and the information provided on the CAIQ traceability label, raising serious concerns about the authenticity of the products.
The reporter checked the Yangege flagship store on Tmall and found that, according to data from December 2013 to April 2015, the store ranked first in sales within the bird's nest category. This high volume of sales made the allegations even more alarming.
Upon receiving the report, the Zhejiang Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau launched an investigation into six companies that had filed for imported bird's nest products. They traced the flow of these products and shared their findings with the Hangzhou Market Supervision Administration. Both departments then worked together to conduct a thorough investigation.
Preliminary findings indicated that the Tmall seller (Yangege) had removed the original source codes from the bird's nests and replaced them with labels from other products, falsely representing them as authentic. The Binjiang Branch of the Hangzhou Market Supervision Administration also conducted forensic sampling of the products sold by Yangege. As a result, the Tmall Yangege flagship store has now removed the disputed bird's nest items from its inventory.
This case highlights the growing need for stricter oversight of e-commerce platforms and better consumer protection against deceptive practices in the luxury goods market. Consumers are urged to remain vigilant and verify product authenticity through reliable channels.
