Exclusive Interview With Suzanne Kasler

Exclusive Interview With Suzanne Kasler

Inspired by architecture, art, fashion, and travel, Suzanne Kasler crafts spaces and products that are luminous, distinctive, and timeless. Her designs always draw from the past while pushing forward with an elegant nod to the present. By blending the high and the low, the classic and the modern, Suzanne creates signature interiors and products that reflect sophisticated simplicity. Her designs encourage everyone to embrace a more beautiful, stylish, and authentic way of living.

For Suzanne, being a designer is not just a profession—it's her true passion. She has an unending fascination with beautiful, intriguing places and objects. Additionally, collaborating with unique individuals across her career has been incredibly inspiring for her. One of the most challenging yet transformative periods in her career was when she relocated to Atlanta over two decades ago to start her own business. Her husband had been transferred by Steelcase, his employer, from Indianapolis. Although she had built a thriving business there with close friends and family, moving to Atlanta proved to be the right decision for her career trajectory. “There’s an incredible design community here, with the best showrooms, vendors, and an abundance of talented architects and clients,” she shared. For Suzanne, life is a continuous journey of growth, so rather than focusing solely on achieving specific goals, she prioritizes staying present, appreciative, and adaptable to change.

Suzanne has always been captivated by the idea of designing homes. During the pandemic, she and her husband decided to acquire a condominium in Palm Beach and began building a family mountain house at High Hampton in Cashiers. “I’ve always adored Palm Beach, and over the years, I’ve grown attached to its vibrant community. The High Hampton community, with its historic inn and partnerships with Blackberry Farm, felt like the perfect fit for us,” she explained. At work, Suzanne finds fulfillment in crafting beautiful and comfortable lifestyles for her clients. “One house at a time, I’m making the world a little more beautiful. And what’s most rewarding is the meaningful relationships and friendships I’ve formed along the way,” she added.

PROJECTS

When it comes to connecting with her audience, Suzanne divides her efforts into distinct phases. Early in her career, she relied heavily on the support of magazine editors, which helped her reach a national audience. Later, when she decided to write a book with Rizzoli, it transformed her business entirely. Creating the book gave her the opportunity to fully showcase her design philosophy and perspective. Since then, platforms like Instagram and social media have allowed her work to reach even more loyal readers and design enthusiasts who follow her projects in magazines. “I approach each audience with the same enthusiasm, but tailored to their preferences,” she noted.

At present, Suzanne and her team are immersed in an exciting international project in Scotland. The client reached out to them during the pandemic, and they’ve managed the entire project virtually through Zoom. It’s a historic manor house designed by architect Archibald Simpson in 1830. They plan to install it in the fall of 2021. One of the major trends she’s observed during the pandemic is how people have come to deeply value and appreciate their homes. “Focusing on the details of how we live, decorate, and create meaningful spaces at home has become increasingly important,” she emphasized.

Describing her ideal client, Suzanne pointed out that there’s one common thread among all her clients—they all share a deep love for design. Her clientele spans diverse backgrounds across the country. Currently, Suzanne collaborates with partners such as Hickory Chair, Ballard Designs, Visual Comfort, La Cornue, and Lee Jofa. Together, they’re developing new products for each collection. She’s also thrilled to announce new partnerships with WestPoint Home for bedding and linens, as well as Mirror Image Home.

TO FINALISE

When it comes to craftsmanship, Suzanne and her team collaborate with exceptional local workrooms. She’s consistently impressed by how these artisans bring her creative visions to life. Her resources—her team, materials, and partnerships—are the backbone of her design process. Regarding the future of global design, she believes the shift toward valuing personal spaces and homes will persist. “The last year and a half have underscored the importance of our homes as sanctuaries. People will continue to invest in professional designers and their personal spaces,” she concluded.
