Dry goods knowledge | How to choose a gel coat

This article is from Patagonia

For those who love surfing and diving, conquering this blue is a great pleasure!

Whether you are diving or surfing, or the triathlons that have gradually emerged in recent years, there is no doubt that everyone needs a suitable gel coat.

Surfing gel coats and diving materials are the same, but there are some differences in design depending on the sporting needs.

In terms of scuba diving, scuba diving requires an oxygen cylinder and a buoyancy adjustment device (BCD, a high-pressure air vest), so the dive gel coat will be thickened on the back to increase friction. Compared to surfing, scuba diving does not require much movement in the body of water, so diving gel coat in design will be more focused on wear resistance.

When surfing, you need to use the entire body to do the movement. If the elasticity is not good enough, it will also affect the body movement. Therefore, the surfing gel coat will be more flexible, especially on the shoulders.

Xiao Bian's main introduction today is surf gel coat ~

Why do you need gel coat

In theory, as long as the ambient temperature is lower than body temperature, it will lead to loss of temperature.

When a person is fully replenished with food, a person who is in good health loses his balance when he loses his body temperature at 20 degrees. If it is 10 degrees, the temperature will soon drop to a loss of temperature. In the state of losing temperature, the body's ability to recover has been unable to make up for the balance.

In water, the amount of heat released by the water is 25 times that of the air, so if you stay in the water for a long time, it is easy to lose heat.

One of the main functions of gel coats is to keep warm and prevent athletes from losing body temperature in the water and causing temperature loss. Another function is to protect the body from being harmed by some creatures in the water.

Therefore, a gel coat that suits you is essential.

Traditional gel coat material:

Most of the gel coat materials on the market are neoprene neoprene, a synthetic material produced from α-polymerization of chloroprene (2-chloro-1,3-butadiene) as the main raw material.

It was first produced by Wallace Hume Carothers of DuPont on April 17, 1930. DuPont publicly announced that neoprene had been invented in November 1931, and in 1937 Formally introduced to the market, neoprene became the first type of synthetic rubber to be industrially produced.

Neoprene rubber is widely used and can be seen everywhere in our daily life, such as wire and cable sheathing, hoses, oil-resistant rubber products, heat-resistant conveyor belts and so on!

Although neoprene materials have many disadvantages as surf clothing fabric materials, such as non-renewable, synthetic materials come from petroleum, and the refining process is complicated, neoprene rubber seems to be the best choice for gel coat manufacturers.

Patagonia gel coat material

In cooperation with Yulex, Patagonia has finally developed a material that can replace the neoprene, using neoprene 85% instead of Yulex natural rubber and 15% synthetic rubber (synthetic rubber is chlorine-free).

Yulex natural rubber is collected from rubber forest farms certified by the RainforestAlliance/ RA Rainforest Alliance Forest Stewardship Council / FSC Forest Stewardship Council.

Patagonia gel coats replace oil-based materials with plant-based materials that provide the same thermal performance characteristics as traditional neoprene while reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 80% during the manufacturing process.

The blended 15% synthetic rubber latex enhances the ozone resistance and UV resistance of the fabric to meet Patagonia's stringent requirements for the elasticity, durability and warmth of the gel coat.

Patagonia gel coat can be divided into the following types according to shape

Half body vest style: suitable for the early morning and early fall of the early spring and evening, wearing a slightly cool.

Full body gel coat: long sleeves, trousers cover the entire torso and limbs, suitable for winter wear.

Long-sleeved shorts gel coat: suitable for spring and autumn, when the temperature is lower than when the water temperature is low or when the wind is relatively heavy.

Vest Pants Gelcoat: Suitable for spring and autumn, when the water temperature is lower than the temperature. Vest trousers type gelcoat is also a classic long board retro style.

Front zipper style: The tight collar design reduces the chance of pouring cold water from the collar.

Rear zipper style: Since the rear zipper has a large opening, it is easy to wear off. Therefore, it is recommended that the upper body torso strong men choose the rear zipper anti-cold clothing.

Gel coat thickness

Gel coat also has its own label like other clothes. In addition to the yardage number, it is usually marked with numbers. These numbers are the thickness of cold clothes.

The patagonia uses R1Lite, R1, R2, R3, R4, and R5 to distinguish different gel coat thicknesses and distinguishes them according to different environments.

The choice of gel coat

Well, now that you know the principle of winter clothes, you know that it has different thicknesses. So, how thick is it?

Here are some of the famous waves in China as an example. A reference value is listed for your reference (the following figure is the month).

Not all cases need to wear plastic clothes, but when the water temperature is below 20 degrees, in order to be able to enjoy peace of mind, enjoy the play, Xiao Bian is also recommended to wear a gel coat this warm protection weapon.

Anti-cold clothing small Tips

1. Soak and rinse the cold clothes with cold water, because the hot water will make the gel coat open and accelerate aging.

2. Hang in dry and ventilated place. Do not expose to sunlight.

3. When using a gel coat, applying Vaseline on the collar and underarm area will prevent the skin from rubbing.

Written at the end: As we have always communicated to our customers, Patagonia's mission is to make high-quality goods, avoid unnecessary harm, and find solutions to environmental crises through business operations.

Every product of patagonia has its own meaning of existence. Integrating every environmental protection concept into our products is not supreme, but it means that you are fighting for a better world. . .
