Tiko3D Officially Launches Tike 3D Printer at $179

Two weeks ago, Tiko3D, a Canadian startup from Ontario, made a big splash at the SXSW conference by unveiling a stunning Delta-style 3D printer. The company announced that the machine would be priced at just $179 and would soon be available on Kickstarter. This affordable yet high-quality design caught the attention of many in the 3D printing community. On March 30, 2015, Tiko3D officially launched its crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter, keeping its promise to bring the Tiko 3D printer to the public. Priced at $179 per unit, the company claims it can still make a profit at this cost. To further entice early supporters, the top 100 backers were offered the printer at an even more attractive price of $99. The company provided detailed technical specifications, revealing how they managed to keep production costs so low. One key feature is the use of a special integrated body frame. The track that controls the movement of the extrusion head is embedded directly into the chassis, resulting in a more stable structure. This not only improves print reliability and accuracy but also reduces manufacturing expenses. In addition, most major components of the Tiko 3D printer were uniquely designed by the development team. For example, their passively-cooled liquefier eliminates the need for active cooling, while the internal wire tray design allows for the use of almost any non-proprietary filament. These innovations make the Tiko stand out from other 3D printers on the market. The Tiko 3D printer features a compact design, weighing just 3.7 pounds and measuring 15.4 x 8.7 x 9.3 inches. It supports a wide range of materials, including PLA, ABS, nylon, and HIPS. With a layer resolution of 1.75 mm and a wire diameter range of 50–250 microns, it offers versatility and precision. The printer also includes cloud-based software, a titanium nozzle, WiFi connectivity, and an enclosed build chamber with an automatic closing mechanism. The crowdfunding campaign kicked off at 1:00 PM Eastern Time on March 30, and within 90 minutes, it had already raised $80,000. Just a few hours later, the total exceeded $158,000—well beyond the initial goal of $100,000. Tiko3D plans to begin mass production in November after thorough testing and optimization. If everything goes smoothly, the first units will be shipped in the same month. “We could set prices higher, but we hope everyone has a Tiko,” the company said in a statement. This innovative and affordable 3D printer is definitely one to watch as it continues to gain momentum in the market.
