LANXESS improves pet bottle raw materials to meet market requirements

With the increasing abundance of material life in Asia, portable beverages packed in polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles are increasingly accepted by consumers. According to statistics from Euromonitor, PET is the most common beverage packaging material in Asia. Among them, PET is particularly popular in China, accounting for 60% of all beverage packaging materials in 2006. PET bottles are also popular in India and are used in a variety of soft drinks and alcoholic beverages in addition to mineral water, milk and fruit juice packaging. According to data from the Japan PET Bottle Association, soft drinks accounted for 93% of all kinds of PET food packaging in Japan in 2007. Not only that, between 2002 and 2007, the use of PET bottles increased by 36%. According to Euromonitor's estimates, as demand continues to increase throughout Asia, by 2010, PET bottles for beverage packaging in Asia will reach 120 billion.

However, due to the inherent yellowing of natural PET, the extraordinary rapid development of the Asian PET bottle industry is also facing challenges. Although yellowing has no effect on the bottle material, it has attracted the attention of beverage manufacturers. Consumers tend to evaluate the quality of a product from the appearance, for example, requiring that the milk be milky white, while the mineral water is colorless, and the beverage manufacturer therefore needs the packaging container to have a clear and transparent appearance.

Macrolex® Red5B, Macrolex® Violet3R and Macrolex® Blue2B from Functional Chemicals Division of LANXESS, a specialty chemicals group, help solve this basic problem. Leading PET producers can obtain clear, colorless or light blue transparent PET by adding Macrolex® dyes during product polymerization. Beer and fruit juice packaging need to be UV-resistant. PET bottles are generally dyed green or dark brown. The PET masterbatch supplied by LANXESS includes a combination of different Macrolex® dyes, enabling manufacturers to optimize the color of the PET material according to the desired application.

Macrolex® dyes come in a variety of delivery forms including microparticles. Among them, hollow spherical particles are easily crushed and can be quickly and uniformly dissolved in plastics. In addition, the dye has excellent flowability, which ensures accurate metering, consistent color formation, no agglomeration, and removes residual components from the container.
