Australia's frozen cut meat brand DON, thanks to the creation of a new form of packaging in its 97% fat-free meat segment, has benefited greatly. The brand is produced and sold by the Meat and Dairy Department of George Weston Foods Limited (GWF) Foods, using resealable zipper packaging, and for the first time in packaging frozen meat products in Australia.
Focus group studies have shown that consumers are increasingly demanding convenient and reliable cutting of meat packaging. Therefore, GeorgeWeston Foods decided to use resealable zipper packaging. In fact, resealable packaging is very common in this category, but the consumer feels that the current system does not provide the desired firmness and complete tightness sufficient to preserve the freshness of the ready-to-use portion. Research shows that consumers often transfer the remaining food to other storage containers to achieve a reliable seal and ensure product freshness.
George Weston Foods Co., Ltd.'s film supplier Aperio Packaging in Sydney recommended Australian Zip-Pak Company to help develop the project. Kevin Young, Innovation Manager at GeorgeWeston Foods Co., Ltd. explained: “We recognize that zipper packaging is the best form that meets the user's requirements for convenience. Since this product was first introduced, we hope to have strength and experience in the field. Reliable supplier cooperation. Aperio company knows Zip-Pak's zipper products very well, so the compatibility of zipper and film is no problem."
Perfect solution
The new packaging was produced on a Rollstock horizontal hot-formed crucible filling and sealing machine. The equipment was delivered to George Weston Foods Co., Ltd. in September 2005. It originally had the ability to add zips, and was later specifically modified to meet the George Weston food. The standard of the company.
Young said: "Of course, the choice of equipment is inexhaustible, but we want a supplier of equipment that can make a match with Zip-Pak and Aperio. These three companies have been working together in the past, so we are convinced that the zipper and film There will be good performance on Rollstock equipment."
The new device packs 150 grams of slicing meat at a rate of about 40 packs per minute. The improved atmospheric packaging successfully combines Aperio's nylon polyethylene peelable barrier film and Zip-Pak's extrusion-seal thermoformed zipper. In order to obtain a larger opening and facilitate the removal of the contents, the zipper is placed on the longer side of the package.
In December 2005, the new resealable Don segmented meat appeared on shelves throughout Australia and was well received by retailers and consumers. GeorgeWeston Foods is planning to develop resealable packaging in other meat and dairy products.
Young concludes: “From a consumer point of view, resealable zippers are the future of convenient, value-added packaging. We are proud to be able to create the technology that will soon become Australia's standard for processing flexible packaging of meat.â€
