Architect Zhuo Zhi, who lived in a small village in Dali, Yunnan, lived in high school and went to the big city to study and work. He has been away from home for more than 30 years.
Five years ago, in order to make his parents live more comfortable, he and his three brothers decided to rehabilitate the old house at home. At the same time, he wanted to live with the four brothers after retirement.
The house plus 4 yards, a total of 700 square meters, can see the rice fields and blue sky outside the window without leaving the courtyard. Zhuo Zhi has 11 people for the whole family, and has made 11 rooms.
During the repair period, despite the pain of his father's death, the four brothers remained united and insisted on building the house. I feel that as long as the family lives together, it is the best way to live.

I have lived in Dali, Yunnan, and I have four brothers in my family. I am the youngest. We live with our parents and live in a village on the west side of the Bohai Sea. There are 200 families in the whole village. They are basically Bai people. Our family is also .
The old house of our family was built around 1986. I moved in from junior high school and it has been until now. Later, our four brothers went to school, work, and get married. They counted and left home for 30 years. .
Designing the manuscript before the repair, in 2013, in order to make the parents live more comfortable, our brothers decided to rebuild the house.
Of course, there is also our "selfishness": after retirement, the four families can live together to support the elderly; when they go home to visit their parents, they can live more comfortably. The cost was shared by our four brothers, because I was an architect and I was responsible for the design of the house.
I kept the original old house, demolished the kitchen and pig shed next to the old house, and built a new three-storey house. The rest of the house was used as a yard.
The overall architectural color is mainly white, although it is a modern building, but retains some elements of the Bai people, such as sloping roofs and tile roofs, which makes the whole building into the surrounding environment, which is not particularly abrupt.
The gates of traditional Bai people's residences are generally a symbol of wealth, so they will be more elaborate. Some big families will even sculpt dragons on the gates. I have improved the original craftsmanship and used simple raft structures as gates. Mouth support.
Dali's natural environment is very good. In order to better integrate the house with nature, I have designed four open courtyards in combination with the terrain, so that both the old house and the new house can get good lighting and vision. It is also more open.
One entrance is a half-acre lotus pond and the first yard. The lotus pond was left by the old house. It was filled with lotus flowers in the summer. Our four brothers had been playing here since childhood. They were full of childhood memories, so I did not make any changes.
The second yard is in the new house, facing south, and is the largest yard. It is separated from the idyllic scenery outside by a wall. The hexagonal blue bricks in the outer corridor are the materials that can be seen everywhere in Dali. The top of the gallery is replaced by glass with traditional tiles. When the sun is good, it will leave light and shadow in the corridor.
Between the old and new houses, the third yard is shared, which can not only improve the lighting of old houses, but also ease the relationship between old and new buildings and reduce the oppression of new houses.
The last yard, on the side of the old house, was built in accordance with the ancient artificial garden method, where a plantain was planted here for four years.
The new house has a lot of floor-to-ceiling windows, sitting in the living room, you can directly enjoy the view of several yards. The traditional Bai people's residences are relatively closed. After such renovations, they can directly see the river ponds and willows in the front yard through the windows.
The round window is the finishing touch of this house. The walls of the Bai people’s residences generally have “fake windowsâ€. The exterior walls are painted with various exquisite paintings to play a decorative role. The few windows I opened are “real†windows, just like the framing. The frame and the scenery in the window will change with the growth of the plants and the natural light, and it will be interesting to change with the seasons.
In 2014, photos of the old house when it started. We have 11 members of the entire family, so I designed 11 rooms on three floors.
The small suite on the first floor is designed for parents. Outside the window is the idyllic scenery. Considering the inconvenience of the elderly, they can walk freely in the yard and the room without taking the stairs.
The largest room is the south facing south side of the west. It was designed for the big brothers. On the terrace, you can see the rural scenery of Dali and the Cangshan Mountain. The whole process from sunrise to sunset is also in sight.
The room on the third floor of the north is the best location with a 270-degree view. We add a wooden grille outside the window to enhance the privacy of the room and echo the traditional architecture. There is also a glass skylight in this room, the village is less polluted, and you can count the stars in the bed at night.
Our Bai people have a tradition: if there are several brothers and sisters in the family, they usually have to be separated after they become adults. Since we decided to build a house to support the elderly, the elders in the village have raised objections and felt that the four brothers should be separated.
In the process of building the house, my father passed away, leaving only the old mother alone, which strengthened our determination to transform the old house together.
After the house was built, the old mother and the family were very satisfied, just because our four brothers had not retired and could not move in immediately.
At that time, parents raised all of our four brothers into college students, and let us be the only child in the village who went out to study in that era. In the most difficult time, they did not let us drop out of school to help, and our four brothers have always been grateful.
The four of our brothers have left their hometown for so many years. Only the holidays can get together. Now they are getting older and more aware of the value of family. In the future, when several small families live together, there will inevitably be some contradictions and frictions, but I think that everyone will have a way to solve them. Nothing is more important than a family.
