This brand is a sign of our self-identity and reflects the spirit of our teamwork.
Our brand logo originates from an Indian rock painting named Canyonsland near the Colorado River. This petroglyph has been a thousand years old.
This petroglyph belongs to the unique sacred world of Indian: a mixture of magic and religion that moves between the real and the spiritual world. For us, each person's interpretation of this rock picture and the resulting dream are the most important reasons why we use it.
This image gives a pure feeling. It embodies a full of spiritual strength, but also an urgent need for communication, it is this kind of power that inspires human beings to build and improve themselves to meet the needs of survival, development and progress.
Every object in this image has a symbolic meaning--
The rope symbolizes the spiritual connection between man and heaven, just as it accepts the will of God.
The heart-shaped head conveys knowledge and information, implying the spirit of self-dedication;
The sun, moon, and snow around people remind people to always remember to fight with nature.
Let us all, everyone take their intentions, raise their spirit, in order to consolidate their position in the team, in order to achieve our common goals and efforts to achieve it!
The beginning of business in 1968
The Fernand Petzl workshop at the foot of the "Dentde Crolles" hill in St-Nazaire-les-Eymes began operation.
1975-2000 pioneering company
In 2000 Petzl ushered in its 25th anniversary. Over the past 25 years, we have been committed to innovating and producing our products in order to make the courage of the courageous people challenge the peaks and make them safer and more comfortable in the dark.
During the past 30 years, Petzl has been a strong contributor to the development of vertical mining and rock climbing technology as a powerful collaborator of the Alps and the Himalayas expedition. Now, the new technology invented by Petzl has succeeded in blooming dazzling flowers in the modern climbing movements we experienced. At the same time, they have led a real technological revolution in the field of rescue technology and high-altitude work.
Although Petzl has taken a leading position in the sports and industrial markets, we are still growing. We grew from a small company with only five employees in 1975 to a large team with nearly 250 employees. Now we have 4 French subsidiaries including CharletMoser and 2 subsidiaries in the United States responsible for production and distribution. Now, we still adhere to our beliefs and continue to develop them. Our belief is: independent spirit, innovative ideas, high quality and respect for customers. This is also the guiding principle of our corporate culture. It is these four principles that have kept Petzl's brand invincible for a long time and gained international recognition.
Today, Petzl's products have become a benchmark for measuring product quality internationally. Such word of mouth reflects the work organization ability and overall strength of all the staff of our company, and we are very proud of it. In today's "new economy" and increasingly fierce competition, our products will face the impact of being copied and counterfeited, but maintaining and further improving our reputation is the basic direction of our future development, we are all going to go all out!
Our dream began at the foot of the "Dent de Crolles" hill in St-Nazaire-les-Eymes. It began with the work of a blacksmith's workshop in Saint-Nazaire-les-Eymes. It was here that Fernand Petzl began to turn his talent into reality...

1975-2000 Fernand Petzl, speleologist and inventor
Fernand Petzl founded spirology in the 1930s. He was only 17 years old and many things have not yet been invented.
Fernand is the son of a German diaspora and a skilled mechanic and model maker. He started his first workshop in an old blacksmith shop in Saint-Nazaire-les-Eymes, 20 km from Grenoble, France. At that time, he made molds for the foundry.
In 1936, Fernand met Pierre Chevalier, a cave explorer. Both of them have a common aspiration: to become the greatest cave explorer of the time, to advocate for new technologies, and to become the first person to chart the elevation of 1,7000 meters above the “Dent de Crollesâ€.
Their consensus is a key factor in the development of many vertical technologies that are now widely used by cave explorers and climbers.
Since the 1940s, after work, the two men began experimenting with new techniques and new climbing tools that he invented in Fernand Petzl’s workplace. After this, Fernand Petzl invented the world's first climbing pole.

1975-2000 Fernand Petzl, Cave Explorer and Inventor
In 1943, Troudu Glas, Fernand Petzl, and Pierre Chevalier in Isere started testing the cords made by Pierre Chevalier made from a new material of the time. The new material was nylon. Since then, fiber ropes have quickly been replaced by artificial synthetic ropes, and history has taken a big step forward. This new technology is not only widely used in sports, such as mountaineering, rock climbing and marine sports. It has also played an outstanding role in industries such as construction and high-altitude operations.
The first 50 years was a magnificent underground exploration period, which included mountaineering in the Alps and the Himalayas. At the time, the Grenoble division of the French Alps Club (CAF) was preparing an international expedition to Gouffre Berger in the Vercors Mountains. Fernand Petzl was assigned as the team leader. After three years of expedition, the expedition finally broke the depth record of world expedition (-1122 meters). Fernand Petzl's name is therefore also included in the history of the cave community as a legend.
In 1960, Fernand Petzl founded the Speleology Committee in the Isere Division and in 1972 was appointed as a director of a rescue company by Isere executives.

In the late 1970s, Fernand Petzl improved Bruno Dresser's grip and descent. Because of these improvements, ropes eventually replaced the ladder.
This is a revolutionary beginning for vertical activities such as sports, rescue, or subsequent industrial and construction.
The development activities and new history of Petzl products in Saint-Nazaire-les-Eymes workshop
(The first version of Dressler's SIMPLE descender and rope ladder, headlight, pulley, transition, BASIC and ASCENSION)
1968-1975 From the workshop industry to mass production
In the workshop of Saint-Nazaire-les-Eymes in 1968, the originally manufactured products were BASIC rope clamps and SIMPLE descenders. These products were managed by Fernand's second son, Pierre Petzl. Like his father, he was just a moldmaker and later became a speleologist.
This small workshop is not extraordinary. New ideas and ideas are being looked at here like nurseries, where the world’s greatest cave explorers, mountaineers, and rock climbers gather to exchange information and chat. The products here are sold directly to clubs and users under the name "Produits Fernand Petzl" (produced by Fernand Petzl).
In 1970, Fernand's third son Paul Petzl joined the workshop. He is a speleologist and also a technician. At this time, their business has included climbing gear.
In 1971 Yannick Seigneur and Bernard Mellet were the first to climb the western mountains of Makalu Hill (8,470 meters). So far, it has been applied to high altitude areas after being crowned with PETZLASCENSION.
In 1972, Fernand Petzl invented the first equipment in the world to use ropes to safely ascend and descend: The first "SHUNT" was born!
In 1973, Petzl's invented headlamps that evolved from speleological lighting and "put all heads on" are also a small revolution: your hands no longer need to raise the lights to illuminate the road! Interestingly, the first test item's elastic material was cut off from Pual's wife, Catherine, from a bra bought at the St. Bruno supermarket in Grenoble, and it was hand-stitched.
Randoneeski Bundle development in 1974. OlivierMeot and OlivierGignoux invented "LaPetzl" as the leader. The name has been recorded in the history of slope skiing, from the slopes of Annapurna to the grand Alpine corridors, all associated with Jean-Mare Boivin's name. This bundle was not discontinued until 1990.
In 1975, "Sarl Petzl" moved to a new operating site (500 meters) at Crolles Industrial Park (20 km from Grenoble). The history of Petzl's trademark industrial products has really begun...
1976 - 1986 From the initial climbing rope to the creation of the R&D department
In 1976, Sarl Petzl employed 5 employees. The direct sale to the end user is over. With the help of the British cave explorer Mike Meredith, the real sales strategy was implemented.
In 1977, Lancelon was born. Jacques Lancelon, a friend of Paul Petzl's speleology and also a lathe operator, (in his son's bedroom!) invented the first cave to explore harnesses and towbags. He converted the garage into a workplace and started production of the first Petzl harness with the help of his wife.
In 1978 Mike Meredith published the book LaSpseleologieverticale (Vertical Cave Exploration). This book was translated into 7 languages and spread the word of mouth of Petzl products to the world.
In 1980, the ropes achieved great success. Lancelon moved to a new site in Seyssins and expanded it four times later.
In 1981, assisted by Patrick Edinger, Jean-Paul Janssen's film "LaVieauboutdesdoigts" ("Fingertip Life") has achieved great success. It has promoted the development of rock climbing and led to a rock climbing in society. Zooming headlights came into being and has so far maintained the world’s top sales.
In 1983, due to high production quality, ease of use and comfort, and simple and beautiful design, Choucas, Vercors, Adrenaline and Jump's climbing ropes achieved great success. With the admiration of a new generation of climbers, they have become the most popular tools in the world today.
In 1985 Petzl's products had more than 1,000 retailers in France.
The R&D department was born in 1986. Petzl invested in a pilot building and a laboratory. It is also one of the first companies to be able to invest in building and improving national and international safety standards. The “Petzl Working Group†includes the best speleologists, mountaineers, rock climbers and technical consultants to ensure the progress of production and the development of safety measures.
From the high-altitude operations and rescue markets to the US market (TMI) from 1987 to 1991
In 1987, the design studio was dedicated to inventing special products for the aerial work and rescue markets. These new products, which are completely different from cave exploration and climbing products, were first introduced to the market (first product details) in 1988.
In 1989, Nanette Raybaud and Simon Nadin (members of the Petzl Working Group) won the first trophy in the world of climbing.
In order to sell Petzl products in the work and rescue market in 1990, the “Petzl Securite†(Petzl Security) department came into being. As a pioneer, Petzl once again takes the lead in “individual test†products: all safety products are subjected to rigorous individual tests at the production site: special quality assurance. The Fernand Petzl lecture hall (100 seats) was opened. This lecture hall at the Crolles factory is a special place for training and communication.
In 1991, Petzl and TMI entered the US market, and RockThompson was responsible for the operation of the institution. The new production facility is located near Salt Lake City and is responsible for producing Petzl's hooks. SPIRIT has introduced a "blockade" system for new product arrangements: a new anti-interference termination. GRIGRI succeeded in its research and development: this is the first equipment for the safety of the leader and the second person. It is a device that automatically locks the rope to the tether.
1992-1995 Quality Road: ISO9001 Certification
In 1992, the company reorganized at the legal level and formed the Petzl Working Group (family work group). This task force is mainly responsible for the centralized delivery of services to various subsidiaries in France and managing their development. Lancelon (28 employees) relocated to the new building in Eybens (3 km from Grenoble).
In 1993, the US Mount Ryan (Petzl Working Group) succeeded in the first free climb from the Nose to Capian (Yosemite, USA) route. FrancoisLegrand and Robyn Erbesfield (member of the Petzl Working Group) won the men’s and women’s teams of the World Cup climbing competition, Francois Legrand has maintained this glory for four consecutive years, and Robyn Erbesfield has also won the championship for the second time.
The tracking system was put into use in 1994: All personal protection devices (PPEs) have been numbered. This system of five numbers and one letter has now been used to trace every product in the production process.
In 1995 Petzl and Lancelon production plants passed ISO9001 certification. This international certification standard is that every manufacturer wants to pass but it is also the most difficult to pass. Its inspection covers the company's entire quality system, and must pass inspections from product marketing planning, product storage, and after-sales service. The PPD agency was established in Lafayette, Georgia, USA. This agency is responsible for the sale of Petzl's products to the North American market (US and Canada).
From 1996 to 1999 from the new factory in Crolles to the creation of "Petzl USA" and Quatuor
The Crolles site was expanded in 1996: The new factory won the Arch'Enge Award for architecture. The management, supply and shipping of finished products have been doubled and calculated. Three departments are responsible for marketing: Petzl Movement, Petzl French Security and Petzl International Export.
In 1998, Petzl purchased the TSA logo to endorse its cave exploration product. There is a good team in this new subsidiary's new product division. It ranks fourth and is called Quatuor.
Tiblor was successfully invented in 1999! This is the world's smallest and lightest climbing clip (39 grams). TMI has passed ISO9002 certification while reorganizing in the North American market. PPD was renamed Petzl-USA and moved to Salt Lake City, USA, where the company has provided TMI and a large number of climbing clips for its development.
